Some of the old books on display as part of the historical exhibit in the residence at Cardiff Castle. (Google tells me the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica was published in 1889.)

….And it turns out that maybe I need a smack and Google was not exactly wrong. The Ninth edition was published at one or two volumes a year from 1875 through to 1889 … It just so happened that the volume I picked up was Volume 18 (ORN-PHT) which was first published in 1885…. and on further looking at first pages I see that my actual set is a reprint of all volumes done in 1899….
Nitpicky correction – give Google a smack… my actual physical copy of the ninth edition, which has the exact same binding as your images says it was published 1885 (MDCCCLXXXV)
