Long journey

As I was on my way to meet my friend for a photowalk, I ran into Herman Zapp, who’s driven his 1928 Graham-Paige Model 610 from Argentina to Alaska. He says he’s about to undertake a drive across Asia.
Getting around
His antique was parked at 8 St. and 12 Ave. S.W. and was attracting a steady stream of curious onlookers. Good luck to you, Herman.

Why Rooibos is good for you

Oolong Tea House in Kensington. In the  cup, not Rooibos, but something far more tart: Apple Cranberry.

Went photowalking with Dave from work — he calls it “photo wandering” — through downtown Calgary today. Here’s a picture of Olympic Plaza:

Citius, Altius, Fortius
Of course, we found a bit of time to fool around:

First place

Like they say in French, “ça va mieux à deux.”

Go to my Zooomr site to see more photos from our afternoon on the town.

Is it too early to stir up feelings of liberty among students?

Quiz master

I joined some of my co-workers for a friendly Calgary Corporate Challenge quiz battle last night. On our team were Dave Breakenridge, Todd Saelhof, Dave Dormer and myself. We fought hard and came out on top through trivia on Calgary, Alberta & Canada, general knowledge, sports, entertainment and Canadian sights & sounds. Thanks for a wonderful evening!

Time travel

Spent almost three hours browsing through the exhibits at the Military Museums in southwest Calgary today. It was my first time there and I was impressed by the extensive collection of Canadian military artifacts dating to the Boer War at the turn of the last century. The institution was once known as the Museum of the Regiments. I intend to make a return trip once the naval museum opens there. Here are a few snapshots:

Penny Lane destruction (continued)

Another visual update on what’s left of Penny Lane Mall in Calgary.

Once a party haven

The whole neighbourhood smells like a mouldy basement right now.

Baby, it’s cold outside

Copper tone

Drove out to a convenient rural location early this morning to catch a nice view of a total lunar eclipse.

It had been a while since I’d seen such an event. I forgot how beautifully dark it gets when the moonlight gets snuffed out by Earth’s shadow.

At first you notice you can’t see your shadow anymore, then stars of lower magnitude show up, then the Milky Way gets really milky.

Apart from occasional noise from a nearby quarry, it was perfectly quiet, perfectly still.

The only downside was the temperature. I had a toque and gloves on pretty much the whole time, and my feet were ice cold for hours afterward as I tried to get some sleep.

More photos at my Zooomr site.
