Sparkling streamliner

Another oldie, this time from the start of my railfanning days.

Sparkling streamliner

This image was taken on a sleepless night, looking forward on the upper level of the Park Car (domed observation car) aboard the Ocean, Via Rail’s Montreal-Halifax overnight train. We were somewhere west of Rimouski, Que., at the time. What you see here is a long exposure, with passing lights reflecting off the fluted, stainless-steel bodies of the train cars.
This photo was once featured in the Gallery section of Trains magazine.

Spent my days off taking in some of the shows at the Calgary Fringe Festival, taking place at various venues in Inglewood this year.
My friend and colleague Dave Breakenridge is blogging about the Fringe at the Calgary Sun website. If you’ve got a minute, go see what he thinks of the acts. And if you’ve got a little more time, go down to take in some of the shows.

From the Ground Up is a furniture store by day but a Fringe venue by night.

Here’s another shot from my mini-photowalk in Montreal.

Colour your world

As you might have guessed, the scene has a little less contrast and saturation in reality.

Who needs lens filters when you have stained glass?

At the market

After driving past the Calgary Farmers’ Market at Currie Barracks more than once, I figured it was time I went inside for a peek.
The prices are comparable to that of your neighbourhood grocery store but at least here you know the money is going to folks who grow their goods near here.
And for the most part, the quality of the produce is a little better than what you’d expect at the big chains. Fresh cooked goods are also sold here. Western European, Mediterranean and Asian cuisine are available. (I went for a stuffed pepper.)
If you’re into desserts, you can buy all the fudge, pies, cakes and other pastries you want from the various stalls.
And then are the artists who sell their work here.
Two vendors, StoneCraft Mosaics of Black Diamond and Gorgeous Glass of Turner Valley, kindly allowed me to snap a few shots at their stands. Here are three examples of what they sell (click for larger image):

And to top it all off, a young cellist was at the door busking. Hope he made lots of money today.
Next time I’m there, maybe the Candy Guy’s stall will be less busy so I can photograph in there. 🙂
In short, this was a cool way to spend a couple of hours.
