Tree

Some of the playful art hung on the fence at the playground outside the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association in Calgary. Captured this in late spring 2016.

Domain of the robots

… and their monkey accomplices. There’s always something creatively put together in the display window of this local Calgary toy store. This instance was from October.

Christmas in Kensington

Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood all decked out for the season. I snapped this photo right before we were gifted a white Christmas! Merry Christmas to you and yours.

O Christmas Tree

It’s definitely feeling like Christmas inside this downtown Calgary shopping centre … and the Christmas tree looks so much more grand after the stores close and the tree has the mall almost to itself.

Festive wind trees

These “wind trees” are installed on Stephen Avenue in Calgary, between 2 and 3 St. S.W. near Bankers Hall and The Core shopping centre, to help reduce the wind tunnel effect from all the tall buildings in the area. They’re current lit in seasonal colours.

Christmas come early!

Look who I bumped into while out wandering earlier today! Santa tells me his early appearance is owing to his task of bringing some extra joy and cheer to the city. (The fresh coat of snow came just in time, too.)

Downtown West

Downtown West, Calgary, Nov. 27, 2016. The neighbourhood is home to a forest of residential towers. (Ricky Leong photo)

Skyscrapers are the hallmarks of many modern cities.
But what if our race to the sky was a mistake?
In my newspaper column last week, I shared my thoughts on some of the difficulties facing the City of Calgary as property tax revenues slump due to empty office spaces downtown.
The more time I spent thinking about the subject, the more I wondered about whether the central neighbourhoods in many of our cities were unintentionally set up to fall — and fall hard — with every economic slowdown.

Glow and flutter

In honour of Remembrance Day, a portion of the Canadian war veterans’ memorial (photo captured at sunset last summer) near Poppy Plaza in northwest Calgary. The words are from the poem In Flanders Fields by Lt.-Col. John McCrae.

What made you smile?

From time to time, interactive message boards like this one appear on one of the posting walls in Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood. Two thumbs up to whoever conceived of this engaging piece of interactive art — and the same to all who left a part of themselves behind in the form of a sticky note. These messages were posted back in the spring.

Shot through imperfect glass

Through imperfect glass

The photo apps on your phone come with fancy filters — not unlike what you see here, from the Hipstamatic app.
But sometime, real-life objects do the job just fine — again, not unlike what you see here, a photo shot through an imperfect airplane window on my way to Europe back in September.
This was snapped from aboard Air Canada 850 (YYC-LHR).
