Stampede Saturday, take two

Howdy, cowboy!

I went back to the Stampede today to visit the animals, something I neglected to do on my last visit. Click here to see more pictures from Stampede.

Stampede Saturday

Night rider
Spent last Saturday strolling on the grounds of the Calgay Stampede. I’m not a rides person but I did ride the Sky Ride cable-car to snap the above photo at sunset. Might go back this weekend to see some of the agricultural exhibits, which I missed last week. I also didn’t eat any of the weird food they serve there — hot beef sundae and deep-fried cheesecake, for example. Hmm. Click here to see more pictures from Stampede.

Penny Lane update

Well, the demolition of Penny Lane Mall has started. What more can I say?

Buck? Don’t you mean …

Found this clever ad on the side of a bus shelter in downtown Calgary tonight. It’s from ING Direct.

Bonne Saint Jean Baptiste!

Buried in balloons

Who knew there’d be a Saint-Jean-Baptiste party out here? This is Benjamin, who came with his parents to a Saint-Jean-Baptiste party at Marguerite Bourgeois school in southwest Calgary.

Moooving sight

Urban cattle

So Calgary’s sprawling in all four quadrants, yet you can still find cattle grazing right on city limits. I spotted this herd on 12 Mile Coulee Rd., just west of Citadel. They scampered away in a hurry right after I shot this photo. Who knew they could run so fast.

Waiting his turn

That’s one of my best friends, Matt Peterson, waiting on the sidelines for his turn to play at the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club on June 8.

General hospital

A walk in Victoria Park last week brought me to the ruins of Calgary’s second General Hospital.

I couldn’t identify what it really was until I got home and did some research on the Internet. Too bad this structure was torn down in 1973 instead of being fully preserved.

The whole neighbourhood has slowly been drained of its residents in expectation of the expansion of Stampede Park. Much of the homes and businesses in the area have been bulldozed. That said, a few condo projects are going up in their place.

Still, it’s sad to see a good chuck of Calgary’s history simply missing.

I found this really old photo when I was transferring my CD photo backups onto DVD a few weekends ago. It was taken for a news photography class.

Tom Draper (foreground) and his children enjoy the toboggan run at Dufferin Terrasse in Québec City. John, 10, and Margaret, 8, were disappointed when their father said there would be no time for a second ride. The Drapers are from Boston.
