Pulling back the curtain

The industry of Hollywood is all about fantasy … so it’s appropriate for some of the art in Hollywood to be the same. Here’s a cool trompe-l’oeil just off Hollywood Blvd.

Hidden tribute

Found this in La Jolla, California last month. There’s a name hidden in this piece of memorial art.

Everything in pairs

It took a second visit to Portland to notice how, from this point of view, the glass towers of the convention centre mirror the two towers of the old Steel Bridge.

Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art goes to the birds

Elaborate birdhouse

Birdsong fills the entrance to the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles.
A very appropriate sound as the space is dominated by a huge metallic sculpture in the shape of a bird.
My eyes followed my ears, searching for the source of the sweet, soothing chirping sounds. There were speakers, somewhere, no doubt.
Instead, I found swallows nesting about the structure, their song amplified by the art that serves as their home.
What a wonderful melding of urban art and nature.

Symphony of shapes and shadows

The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles is an architectural marvel. Thank you, Frank Gehry.

The world as art

These windows at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, California, showcase the living art that is the Pacific Ocean.
A security guard there said artists would prefer not to be displayed in this gallery because people spend more time staring out the window than at anything else in the room. (And as it happens, on this day, the other walls are bare.)

Surveying a changing cityscape

These are the horse sculptures outside Calgary city hall, looking over Olympic Plaza toward The Bow skyscraper and the twin towers of the Suncor Energy Centre.

City of Calgary public art called Luminous Crossings

Here is some Calgary public art I can happily support. This twisted tower of light is one of several going up at both ends of the 7 Ave. transit corridor, at City Hall and Downtown West stations. The whole installation is called Luminous Crossings; you can read more about it here.

Dealmakers

There’s a cool statue outside the Bay store in downtown Calgary, showing two businessmen seemingly making a deal. Until this week, I hadn’t noticed what their hands were doing.
