Everything in pairs

It took a second visit to Portland to notice how, from this point of view, the glass towers of the convention centre mirror the two towers of the old Steel Bridge.

Vers St. Boniface

This beautiful pedestrian bridge in Winnipeg, Manitoba, links the Forks area just off Union Station with the city’s traditionally francophone area, St. Boniface.
(The photo above was captured with an SLR; the bottom one was snapped with my iPhone.)

Strolling into town on the Peace Bridge across the Bow River in Calgary, designed by Santiago Calatrava

This bridge was hard on the wallet … thank goodness it’s easy on the eyes.

From what I can see, Santiago Calatrava’s pedestrian bridge in Calgary continues to draw non-commuting visitors, especially on weekends, in addition to folks who use the crossing in a functional manner.
Despite the controversial way in which the structure was acquired, I’m happy to see it being embraced by the community.

Beautiful bridge … bad planning

Unfinished work

As you may have heard in the news in the last few weeks, Calgary’s West LRT came up short for funding because someone at city hall forgot to factor in more than $8 million for the mandatory public art component of the project.
Nothing new, sadly. As you can see above, previous budget errors means the south end of the Peace Bridge remains free of landscaping, until the city can scrape up some money to take care of it.
This lack of foresight it shameful. We should be able to do better.

Stretching into the core

What can I say, except that the Peace Bridge is surprisingly photogenic.

Riding over the Bow

People (including me, I suppose) are still going to the Peace Bridge to look at it … but many like this cyclist are using the bridge for its intended purpose.

Skeletal structure

A really tight, extremely cropped view of the Peace Bridge in Calgary, taken just a few days before it opened.
