Sur le belvédère

This is a classic Montreal viewpoint. I’d never been as an adult — and drawing on my (admittedly dusty) recollections from my youth, it’s quite possible I’d never seen Montreal from here at all until now.

Massive hulk rising

Géant en construction

Now *that’s* different!
It was utterly shocking to turn a corner in Montreal’s Chinatown and see the new University of Montreal hospital complex (Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal) rising high where there used to be only sky. I’ve seen it slowly built on my visits over the years but this is the first time the structure’s seemed so in-your-face.
The building is clearly going to dwarf the entire neighbourhood around it. (For the sake of perspective, I was a bit shy of 500 metres from the building when I snapped this shot.)
There’s a website for the new hospital, en français bien sûr!

Contravention

Found this citation buried under autumn snow and detritus as I wandered the other day on a visit to Montreal.

Landing

Was going through some images that got overlooked from my summer vacation … and here’s one of them. That was the view out the window as my flight from Amsterdam arrived at Toronto Pearson International Airport, way back in August.

For those among you who don’t live in Calgary, you should know our weather is … how shall I say … variable.
The photo on the left was taken yesterday; it was sunny and the daytime high was 25 to 27 Celsius, depending who you ask.
The photo on the right was taken today; definitely not sunny and the temperature has been falling since overnight, now hovering around 0 Celsius.
What a change!

Glistening orange

Stuff like this is why glass buildings are generally prettier than brutalist concrete structures. Spotted in downtown Calgary last week.
