As you wander around towns big and small in Germany’s Rhine (Rhein) River valley, you’ll see vineyards everywhere — some commercially productive, some uncultivated. There are even grapes growing randomly along public walking paths. Snapped this image when I visited the town of Bacharach in September 2015.

The Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is a magnificent structure looming over the city centre, just outside the doors of the main train station.
Given its sheer size, it’s no surprise the church is seemingly under constant renovation. The last two times I passed by, in September 2015 and September 2016, there were obvious signs of repair work being done to the building’s exterior.
As you walk around the complex, you’ll notice a workshop toward the back of the church, home base for the people who keep the structure in good repair. That’s were I was able to snap this photo of some very appropriate masonry, captured on my 2015 stopover.

It seems there’s something romantic about attaching a lock to the railings of a bridge as a symbol of one’s love for his/her partner. This romantic gesture is popping up all over the place, including here, on the pedestrian portion of a rail bridge near the main train station in Cologne, Germany. (Snapped this while passing through town in 2015.)
But as with everything, it can be overdone: In Paris, city officials had to remove locks from its bridges in the last couple of years because they were adding too much weight to the structures, to the point of causing a railing to collapse. And frankly, it doesn’t look too pretty after a while …
