Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. In Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K., the poppy has become the symbol of remembrance of fallen soldiers in all wars. The poppy was first used in this way by the American Legion, inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields by Canadian Lt.-Col John McCrae. The poppies in the photo above were spotted in bloom at Riley Park in Calgary, back in August.

A 3-D representation of the United Kingdom’s coat of arms, spotted as I wandered around  Bath, England, back in May.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The Mewata Armoury is, to me, one of the signature buildings on the west side of Calgary’s city centre. There’s nothing else quite like it. (Also, what a hoot to see signage in French! The English message was on the other side.)

London, England, U.K.

These signs, recovered in the aftermath of the First World War and now displayed at the Imperial War Museum in London, helped soldiers navigate the maze of trenches on the front lines.

Looking up, an opulent chandelier hangs from the high ceiling inside the summer smoking room at the top of Cardiff Castle’s clock tower. Along the walls closer to floor level, of which a small portion is visible in this image, the story of the mythical gods in the 12 zodiac signs is depicted in paintings and sculptures.
