Sun over Buda Hill

If you’re in Budapest on a late summer afternoon, standing near the riverside a few steps from the Hungarian Parliament building in Pest, this is what your camera might see across the Danube to the castles of Buda. Your eyes will likely do a better job 🙂

Socialist art

All over eastern portions of Berlin — especially in the art adorning buildings — there are hints of communist times. Here are but two examples.

Togetherness

Time standing still

The sands of time are immoveable … but only in this exact spot in Budapest. This stylized hourglass, a piece of public art to celebrate Hungary’s admission to the European Union, doesn’t actually work anymore.

This is Neue Wache, a memorial in Berlin dedicated to civilian victims of war.
According to online and other published documentation, the central statue depicting a mother and her dead child is placed under the oculus to deliberately expose it to the elements.
It also provides the moving piece of art with very striking lighting.

Walk steeped in history

This awesome row of columns is found along one side of Museum Island in Berlin. The crowds are relatively sparse if you visit first thing in the morning.

This is a kitschy but awesome throwback to the old East Germany, right in the heart of Alexandrplatz. Seen on my recent visit there, at the beginning of the month.

Just a day after international train services resumed at Budapest-Keleti station, whigh allowed thousands of Mideast migrants access to Germany and Austria, a few of those migrants remained to wait for their turn to leave. This short video is a snapshot of what the scene there was like Sunday morning.

Sweet Marilyn

Simple carbohydrates can make complex art. This cool portrait of Marilyn Monroe, lovingly constructed with dozens upon dozens of jelly beans, is in the front window of a Calgary candy store — appropriately enough.

Better latte than never

Recently spotted outside a coffee shop (where else!) in Calgary.

Animal instinct

… now they’re only found in such pieces of art as painting and statues, including this one behind the old Court of Appeals building in downtown Calgary.
