Pioneer Square

A beautiful morning in Portland’s Pioneer Square. This image was captured just about a month ago.

Hidden tribute

Found this in La Jolla, California last month. There’s a name hidden in this piece of memorial art.

Interesting destination

Check out the front roll sign … That looks like it could be an interesting bus ride! Spotted in San Francisco at the beginning of the month.

Hotel California

There are two tales of ignorance tied to this photo.

1) It seemed pretentious to me at first, the idea of a hotel proudly selling self-promotional T-shirts.
While quietly scoffing in my head, I looked around to see what hotel this was.
The sign said Hotel California … and the $5 (I think) T-shirts on sale at the front desk suddenly made sense.

2) Holding up my camera to grab a photo of this sign, someone in a group of young men walking by, likely all in their early 20s, offered to take a picture of me with the sign in the background.
I declined and explained I wanted only the sign, because of the song. A quizzical look fell upon his face.
“Hotel California,” I said. “You know, The Eagles?”
His expression remained unchanged.
“Never mind,” I replied. “Just Google it when you get to a computer.”

Dancing in the wind

This is the work of a very talented kite-flyer, who was hanging out at San Francisco’s Crissy Field a few weekends ago.

Everything in pairs

It took a second visit to Portland to notice how, from this point of view, the glass towers of the convention centre mirror the two towers of the old Steel Bridge.

Futile search for privacy

This is Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as it appeared a few weekends ago, the red carpet about to roll out for the premiere of Ender’s Game. The extensive use of privacy screens made me chuckle.

Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art goes to the birds

Elaborate birdhouse

Birdsong fills the entrance to the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles.
A very appropriate sound as the space is dominated by a huge metallic sculpture in the shape of a bird.
My eyes followed my ears, searching for the source of the sweet, soothing chirping sounds. There were speakers, somewhere, no doubt.
Instead, I found swallows nesting about the structure, their song amplified by the art that serves as their home.
What a wonderful melding of urban art and nature.
