Morning fog and chilly temps won’t stop these people in Venice Beach from riding a wave or two.

Independent thought on Venice Beach

Independent thought

Visitors to the Venice Beach boardwalk are likely not tempted to look down. It’s usually a good idea to keep your head up — to look out at the ocean, to people watch the beach or to keep an eye out for oncoming pedestrian/skateboard traffic.
That said, it’s worth noting someone’s taken the time to paint the entire U.S. Declaration of Independence onto the pavement of the pedestrian path.
If you ever make it there for a visit, it’s a little nugget worth looking for.

Because the pun in the title was irresistible. Spotted this in the Hawthorne district in Portland, Oregon, last week.

The world as art

These windows at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, California, showcase the living art that is the Pacific Ocean.
A security guard there said artists would prefer not to be displayed in this gallery because people spend more time staring out the window than at anything else in the room. (And as it happens, on this day, the other walls are bare.)

River of fog

Looking down from a plane at the B.C. Lower Mainland last Tuesday … that blanket of humidity was quite shallow. As our aircraft was descending for arrival Vancouver airport, the tires hit the runway not long after we pierced through the fog.

U.S. dollar coin: It’s not a myth!

One-dollar coin

So I’d heard for years the U.S. government has been trying to get people to use dollar coins instead of dollar bills.
Haven’t ever seen one in real life, either.
Of course, given the continuing availability of the paper version, I reckon there’s no real incentive for anyone to switch and actually use coins instead.
Imagine my surprise when a store clerk somewhere in Portland last week apologized and asked me if it’d be OK for my change to include a dollar coin.
I happily accepted.

Election season is upon us

To my friends across Alberta: Today is voting day for city councils and school boards. Please exercise your democratic franchise … Go out and vote!
This photo was taken outside Calgary city hall during the advance vote last week; today, it is a polling station for a part of Ward 7.
