James Short

A splash of colour on the cupola of the old James Short School breathes a little visual life into this scene in downtown Calgary. Behind it is the Bow building on the left and a portion of the Suncor Energy Centre on the right.

Calgary’s glowing appreciation of public, modern art

Glow, Calgary Downtown Winter Light Festival

Members of the public line up to view Light Shower, one of the exhibits mounted as part of Glow, Downtown Winter Light Festival, in Calgary on Feb. 20, 2017.

If you’d told me 10 years ago Calgarians would willingly line up more than half-an-hour to experience a shower of light, I wouldn’t have believed you — and I would have been wrong.

There I was, just one of hundreds (maybe even thousands?) of people who patiently queued up this past weekend to experience a piece of modern art called Light Shower, part of Glow: Downtown Winter Light Festival, an interactive, multi-disciplinary, multi-location display of modern art in Calgary.

You often hear complaints about public art being inaccessible, both figuratively and literally, but from what I witnessed this weekend, it can safely be said Glow was just the opposite. While not every piece was a smashing success, people seemed to keep an open mind about what they were seeing, based on fragments of conversations overheard as I wandered from installation to installation.

On top of it all, it was awesome to see so many people — including families with young children — out enjoying our downtown core well into the evening.

With hope, this event will make a comeback for many years to come … and given Glow’s apparent success, perhaps now’s the time to introduce more of such events, to breathe some life into Calgary central business district outside business hours.

Astral view

This piece of Calgary wall art celebrates the night sky. Spotted along 10 St. N.W. last spring.

Domain of the robots

… and their monkey accomplices. There’s always something creatively put together in the display window of this local Calgary toy store. This instance was from October.

Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood all decked out for the season. I snapped this photo right before we were gifted a white Christmas! Merry Christmas to you and yours.

O Christmas Tree

It’s definitely feeling like Christmas inside this downtown Calgary shopping centre … and the Christmas tree looks so much more grand after the stores close and the tree has the mall almost to itself.

Festive wind trees

These “wind trees” are installed on Stephen Avenue in Calgary, between 2 and 3 St. S.W. near Bankers Hall and The Core shopping centre, to help reduce the wind tunnel effect from all the tall buildings in the area. They’re current lit in seasonal colours.

Christmas come early!

Look who I bumped into while out wandering earlier today! Santa tells me his early appearance is owing to his task of bringing some extra joy and cheer to the city. (The fresh coat of snow came just in time, too.)

Downtown West

Downtown West, Calgary, Nov. 27, 2016. The neighbourhood is home to a forest of residential towers. (Ricky Leong photo)

Skyscrapers are the hallmarks of many modern cities.
But what if our race to the sky was a mistake?
In my newspaper column last week, I shared my thoughts on some of the difficulties facing the City of Calgary as property tax revenues slump due to empty office spaces downtown.
The more time I spent thinking about the subject, the more I wondered about whether the central neighbourhoods in many of our cities were unintentionally set up to fall — and fall hard — with every economic slowdown.
