Verdant

Fox Hollow golf course in the foreground, Midfield trailer park above it and the City of Calgary’s ever-changing skyline behind it all. Snapped this image last week.

Endangered streetscape

Take in this view while you can: This block in Calgary’s Kensington area is about to change dramatically. The affected businesses here have either moved away or shuttered for good and the buildings will soon disappear to make way for the Lido condo building, named for the landmark Chinese-Canadian restaurant seen here.

Yarn good friends

The pun in the title was irresistible! This is from the window display of a Calgary toy store.

Ocular implants

Apparently, the original ones weren’t good enough, so someone did a little … cosmetic surgery. Seen recently in a window display in Calgary.

Liquid happiness

Here’s one to kick off your weekend. It appears as if the thought of a nice, icy cold one causes inanimate objects to smile as much as some humans do. This happy sign was seen outside a pub in Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood earlier this week.

Hillhurst Block

Very glad to see plaques with historical information pop up on buildings all over the Kensington business district.
And in case you missed it, I wrote about the state of historical preservation in Calgary in my Sun column several weeks ago.

The paint made me do it

A little piece of sticker art, seen in an alley in Sunnyside a few days ago.

Plaza refreshed

Digging through some photos from late 2013, I came across this quick snapshot of a poster reproducing an artist’s rendition for a remake of Horton Plaza Park in San Diego, above.
It struck me at the time how much those tall metallic columns really look like the Luminous Crossing towers of light at either end of the Calgary transit mall, below.
There’s no evidence (none I could find, anyway) the same artist is responsible for both, which makes this visual/design coincidence even more striking.

Twist of colour

Destroying what others create: Calgary street art defaced

Some create, others destroy

Of all the walls in Calgary to tag, why choose this one? (Not that I like this kind of nuisance graffiti anyway.)
I feel terribly for whoever installed the original art on this building and hope that it can somehow be recovered.
