Tillikum Crossing

This striking structure is part of Tillikum Crossing, the newest bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. Opened to traffic in fall 2015, it’s reserved for use by MAX light rail Orange Line trains, Portland Streetcars, cyclists and pedestrians. It is the first bridge of this sort in the United States, according to TriMet.

King Eddy reborn

Back after a few weeks AFK.
Also (soon to be) back is Calgary’s venerable King Edward Hotel, a noted blues venue, which was carefully dismantled and rebuilt as part of the new Canadian Music Centre in East Village.
Above, how things looked a few weekends ago … and below, when the King Eddy stood alone at the corner of 9 Ave. and 4 St. S.E., almost five years ago.

Reflet

Once upon a time, taking a photo at this location would not have produced the same result. This now-aluminum/glass-shell building, part of the Place Ville Marie complex in downtown Montreal, had its exterior replaced several years ago to remove its deteriorating pre-fabricated concrete components.

Passage to the sky

It’s hard to believe this sci-fi-esque piece of architecture belongs to something as banal as a shopping centre! Spotted in Frankfurt on a lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon back in September.

Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman’s Bastion is a wonderful gem on the Buda side of the Danube River in Budapest.
The structure itself is grand and ornate, while the view of Pest from the top of the attraction is equally spectacular.

S-Bahn

Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin’s main train station, is an elegant and efficient public space.
Its mainly glass train-shed allows lots of natural light into the building.
Organization of train services (regional S-Bahn trains top floor; regional, national and international services in the basement; local U-Bahn adjacent) makes transfers simple.
The large shopping and dining plaza on the two floors between train platforms encourages foot traffic.
Abundant public spaces and public art in, on and near the property add to the attractiveness of the building.
Every modern rail hub should aspire to be as welcoming.

Walk steeped in history

This awesome row of columns is found along one side of Museum Island in Berlin. The crowds are relatively sparse if you visit first thing in the morning.

Walk and talk

Just another evening on the Peace Bridge in Calgary. It’s definitely a popular place to be: It was around 10 p.m. that day and I had to wait several minutes for the bridge to clear sufficiently for a decent photo.

March of progress

Historic Tallinn, with the modern city behind it. This image was snapped back in August from the tower at St. Olaf’s Church.
