Treasures at ground level

It pays to look down! sometimes. I’ve never noticed a piece of art depicting Alberta’s history, embedded in the floor of Terminal A at Calgary International Airport until this week … even though it’s been there for seven years. Above is one portion of it.

Skeletal structure

A really tight, extremely cropped view of the Peace Bridge in Calgary, taken just a few days before it opened.

Sun where the sun normally don't shine

Champ-de-Mars métro station in Montreal was recently identified as one of most beautiful subway stations in the world. Surely, the wonderful panes of stained glass has something to do with it.

Glowing tube

… until this Santiago Calatrava creation is accessible to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
I might not have liked how this bridge came to be and how much the public purse coughed up for it — and I’m unsure if I will ever understand accept how that all happened.
That said, the bridge is there, so we might as well enjoy it for what it is.
This picture was taken last month, not long after the temporary supporting bridge was removed and workers began putting together the finishing touches on the structure.

This chicken is cheering for everyone, it seems.
Back in the fall, dressed up for former Stampeders QB Henry Burris …
Hard days for Hank
… and today, playing the role of Flames net minder Miikka Kiprusoff.
Kipper's chicken
The ultimate bandwagon jumper. In a good way.

Spent my days off taking in some of the shows at the Calgary Fringe Festival, taking place at various venues in Inglewood this year.
My friend and colleague Dave Breakenridge is blogging about the Fringe at the Calgary Sun website. If you’ve got a minute, go see what he thinks of the acts. And if you’ve got a little more time, go down to take in some of the shows.

Serendipity is one of the businesses in Inglewood with extended hours during the Fringe.

From the Ground Up
From the Ground Up is a furniture store by day but a Fringe venue by night.
