Family of Man, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Part of a sculpture known as The Family of Man, outside the former headquarters of the Calgary Board of Education in the city centre.

This is the second home for The Family of Man, with its second name. This piece of art was first called Brotherhood of Mankind, and it was originally part of the British pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal.

Tallest towers, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The heart of Calgary’s central business district during the blue hour, seen a few days ago. Clockwise from top right: The Bow office building, the double towers of the Suncor Energy Centre, Brookfield Place, Hanover Place (not one of the tall towers, however) and the under-construction Telus Sky.

Also: wide-angle lenses are fun.

It's always 3:26, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

This clock outside the Hudson’s Bay department store in downtown Calgary is the physical embodiment of that joke about a broken clock being right twice a day: In this spot, it’s always 3:26. (Until they fix the clock, that is.)

Lest we forget: History knitted together

History knitted together, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Last year, the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in downtown Calgary began displaying thousands of knitted poppies to commemorate Remembrance Day. They are back this year.

Each was hand-knitted or crocheted by Calgarians and people elsewhere around the world, in memory of our those who fell in service of Canada and our rights and freedoms.

We will always remember.

Breakfast all day, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

A beautiful, modern painted sign, seen in a city that has precious few of these from any era. Red’s Diner is on 4th Street S.W. in Calgary, in the Beltline on the way to Mission.
