I am a mountain

The tour guide who safely led our party through the Lower Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona, last month took a lot of his time to point out rock formations that happened to resemble people’s faces or animals in battle. Frankly, I had some trouble seeing some of them … but this one was easy to visualize — cock your head and look straight up to find “Rocky Mountain”.

Layers of history

Here’s another photo snapped last month, while we were on our way from the Grand Canyon to Page, Arizona.

Public art in Phoenix, Arizona

This is some of the public art embedded in the ground at one of the light-rail stations in Phoenix, Arizona — a really neat way to make such project really accessible to the public.

Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona

Rock solid. Between a rock and a hard place. Hard as a rock. So many of expressions and clichés are built upon the durability of rocks.

And yet, wandering through the maze that makes up the Lower Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona, one can only be struck by how malleable rock truly is.

It was water that carved out the canyon. And with every summer rainstorm, it is water that continues to shape and reshape the place.

The result is visually stunning, of course — sunlight giving life to a wavy, rippling red-rock landscape reaching dozens of metres deep.

Hopi Point

Sometimes, nature gives you handy hints about you where you should look, as in this scene at Hopi Point along the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

Fading light

As the sun dipped below the horizon on this day a few weekends ago, there was still enough natural light to capture this scene from a viewpoint at Grand Canyon Village, Arizona.

Old mill, Tempe, Arizona

In trendy downtown Tempe, Arizona, stands the shell of what used to be the Hayden Flour Mill. The historic hulk, which occupies the southeast corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue (appropriately), can be seen up close. There’s a small park adjacent to the building and there are placards along the outside detailing the history of the place. You can even peek inside through the windows to survey the all machinery abandoned and left in place. According to the City of Tempe, the site is awaiting appropriate redevelopment.
