Crossing the Spree

Oberbaumbrücke, which crosses the Spree River in Berlin, is a bridge for private vehicular traffic and trains to/from the Warschauer Straße station at the eastern end of the U-Bahn’s Line 1. This photo was snapped on a gorgeous afternoon this past September.

Constant reminder of the ravages of war

Remembering the ravages of war

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is a singularly unique site in western Berlin.
The older church spire is what remains of the original church, heavily damaged during the Second World War. It has since been restored and its ground floor is a memorial hall spotlighting its namesake monarch, the church’s past, and what it and nearby areas endured during wartime bombing raids.
The spire is surrounded by modern buildings that make up the functional church.
Pictured above are the two belfries, as they appeared on an early autumn evening this September.

No filter

This beautiful, striking colonnade straddles the Spree River on the east side of Museum Island in Berlin. This view was seen my visit there this past September.

Taste of Montreal

As a fella born and raised in Montreal, a sticker like the one above, spotted in Berlin this September, definitely made me do a double-take: The arrow logo has a high degree of resemblance to the symbol representing Montreal’s Metro system, below.

Ode to Ampelmann

Ampelmann

This is one of the retro symbols of Germany.
Ampelmann is the name given to the “walk” symbol from pedestrian traffic lights in East Germany during communist times.
The figure was so beloved, there was an uproar when officials tried to replace it. As a consequence, they remain an active holdover … and it wouldn’t be shocking to find them in parts of Germany that were never behind the Iron Curtain.
Above, a more-than-life-size Ampelmann spotted in Frankfurt’s historic square; below, an Ampelmann in action in Berlin.

Flying on two wheels

This was one of many art installations featuring this character, presented across Berlin back in September.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof

S-Bahn

Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin’s main train station, is an elegant and efficient public space.
Its mainly glass train-shed allows lots of natural light into the building.
Organization of train services (regional S-Bahn trains top floor; regional, national and international services in the basement; local U-Bahn adjacent) makes transfers simple.
The large shopping and dining plaza on the two floors between train platforms encourages foot traffic.
Abundant public spaces and public art in, on and near the property add to the attractiveness of the building.
Every modern rail hub should aspire to be as welcoming.

Socialist art

All over eastern portions of Berlin — especially in the art adorning buildings — there are hints of communist times. Here are but two examples.

This is Neue Wache, a memorial in Berlin dedicated to civilian victims of war.
According to online and other published documentation, the central statue depicting a mother and her dead child is placed under the oculus to deliberately expose it to the elements.
It also provides the moving piece of art with very striking lighting.
