Stampede of old

This is a mural of a historical Calgary Stampede at … the Victoria Park/Stampede LRT station in Calgary. We learned a few days ago that the self-style Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth will go on, in the face of a natural disaster of epic proportions.
One week to go before the whole things gets underway. For many, I’m sure it will be a welcome distraction for the unpleasantness in the news.

Putting things back on track
Calgary Transit workers remove debris from the LRT tunnel north of Victoria Park/Stampede station that was submerged to the ceiling during the height of the flooding.

Calgary Transit’s downtown infrastructure took it on the chin during the record flooding over the last week.
Here are some photos I snapped of the damage and of the work being done to get things moving again.

Repairs on fast track
More work done near Victoria Park/Stampede station. And yes, those tracks are really suspended in mid-air!

Ballast carried away
Floodwaters carried away the ballast beneath the platform at Victoria Park/Stampede station.

Tunnel team
Crews work to restore the Cemetery Hill tunnel, above and next two images.

Rail rally

Shovel in hand

C-Train shuttle
Buses put into service as a C-Train shuttle roam on a very dusty Macleod Trail on June 25.

After Calgary’s floodwaters recede

In the dark
Downtown Calgary as it appeared in the early-morning hours of June 24, 2013. Parts of the core were still without electricity in the aftermath of record flooding in the city. The darkened area in the foreground is the flood-hit neighbourhood of Sunnyside. As of today, power is restored to many of these areas.

My apologies for not posting in several days. To say that I’ve been distracted for about a week is something of an understatement.
As you’ve likely heard in the news, our area was recently hit with flooding from the Bow and Elbow rivers.
The damage and devastation is almost unfathomable. Tens of thousands of people were directly affected, with raging waters as high as anyone can remember flowing into homes, causing property damage to individuals, businesses and governments estimated as high as $5 billion.
You’ve probably seen footage of homes in southern Alberta simply picked up and carried away by swollen rivers.
A handful of individuals also lost their lives in this natural disaster.
In the midst of the loss, however, there is something bright shining through.
As I described in my newspaper column yesterday, the spirit of our community is rising above the devastation.
In several flood-hit neighbourhoods, people are coming together to strip out wet basements and make homes safe.
There are strangers who wander the city offering help to whomever requires it.
Ordinary Calgarians by the thousands have answered the call for volunteers.
And then, there’s all of you across Canada and around the world who’ve offered your sympathy and financial assistance to relief programs, such as the one organized by the Canadian Red Cross.
As impressive as it was to see what water did to our towns and cities, it is even more impressive to see how almost everyone is responding to the crisis.
Thank you, one and all.

Take a spin

Looking north from the Westminster Bridge in London, with the London Eye on the right. This was taken moments after riding the Eye last October. If the weather’s right, this attraction offer a great view.

La plus petite maison

This is the smallest house in Brussels, as spotted as I passed through town last September.
Well, at least, that’s what the sign says.

Magic number

A follow-up to yesterday’s photo: This is at 66 St. Subway station in New York. Lots of beautiful ceramic art adorn the station walls — not just at that station but throughout all the underground parts of the network.

Artistic resistance

The underside of the LRT bridge over the Bow River in Calgary is a revolving canvas for graffiti and public art — drawn, cleaned off and replace by new art. Here’s an entry from this spring.

Amoureux

The “I Heart Cheese” meme pops up all over the place in Montreal street art. The image above was captured this April, while the one below was taken in March 2009.

I love cheese!
