Holding out against the tide

With an entire neighbourhood disappearing around it, this house near the Calgary Stampede grounds has somehow withstood the changes. At last report, it was to be moved to make way for a condo project. When I last visited it at the end of April, it was already it pretty rough shape.

Oxidé

Silo No. 5 is the last-remaining grain silo at the Old Port of Montreal.
Over the last decade or so, it’s been occasionally used as a musical instrument but normally sits unused, awaiting a new vocation. Not directly threatened by demolition, heritage and preservation enthusiasts/activists keep a close eye on this structure.

Beneath 111 Yesler in Seattle

Most people’s exposure to subterranean Seattle is limited to the transit tunnels downtown.
But just a few blocks toward the harbour, the Underground Tour takes you into that city’s first tunnels, intimately tied to Seattle’s history and development.
It’s a particular treat for history buffs and those who love urban decay.
Thanks to our guide Allie (below) for an informative and entertaining visit.

Exposed

Demolition is underway at the old Calgary Herald building site on 7 Ave. and 1 St. S.W. It’s to make way for a new building whose planned height would best The Bow by several metres, which would make it the tallest office tower in western Canada.

Tenir la façade

There’s a lot of work going on next to the Monument National on Saint-Laurent in Montreal. Almost the entire block north of the venue looks like it’s being gutted or renovated.
This building, for example, is just a facade when seen from the main street. You have to go around back to see what’s really going on …
