Paris, France

The word “Paris” typically evokes images of wide boulevards lined with historic stone buildings. Shatter that stereotype by turning your gaze to the city’s business district, La Défense. There, you’ll find a lovely (and lively) sandbox for modern architecture and design. Here are a few images of the neighbourhood from my visit to the French capital in September 2012.

London, England, U.K.

There’s a lot going on at/near the roofline of many buildings in central London. This image is from my most recent visit to the city, back in September 2016.

Dresden, Germany

Dresden’s cathedral was wrecked during the Second World War and remained a pile of ruin for decades. It re-opened to the public in 2005 after years of painstaking restoration. Here’s the scene outside the landmark in September 2016, its adjacent public square buzzing with activity.

Potsdam, Berlin, Germany

Seen about a year ago: Some of the majestic columns in a former royal palace building at Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, Germany, near Berlin. The structure is now part of the campus of the University of Potsdam.

London, England, U.K.

An elevated pedestrian walkway made less-ordinary thanks to a little extra visual something. Spotted near Covent Garden in London last year.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

It’s still seems very unusual to see modern buildings with windows that open, as with the Bow office tower in Calgary. I’m glad designers and building owners are going back to this — when the exterior air conditions are right, nothing beats an open window.
