Holding out against the tide

With an entire neighbourhood disappearing around it, this house near the Calgary Stampede grounds has somehow withstood the changes. At last report, it was to be moved to make way for a condo project. When I last visited it at the end of April, it was already it pretty rough shape.

Endangered streetscape

Take in this view while you can: This block in Calgary’s Kensington area is about to change dramatically. The affected businesses here have either moved away or shuttered for good and the buildings will soon disappear to make way for the Lido condo building, named for the landmark Chinese-Canadian restaurant seen here.

Hillhurst Block

Very glad to see plaques with historical information pop up on buildings all over the Kensington business district.
And in case you missed it, I wrote about the state of historical preservation in Calgary in my Sun column several weeks ago.

Midway

A must-see attraction in San Diego, the U.S.S. Midway Museum documents the history of this storied aircraft carrier and U.S. servicemen’s life at sea in general.

Row on row (II)

Some experiments in post-processing here.
Did an imitation tilt-shift in iPhoto for the image above.
The one below was salvaged from a mediocre digitally zoomed photo, with a sepia-style tone added in Photoforge2 and a frame added in Flickr’s native online photo editing software by Aviary.

Memorial

Made a quick stop at the new Poppy Plaza in Calgary not long ago … I should definitely make plans to come back and shoot here after dark soon.

Ancient multiculturalism

This is one of the more interesting artifacts at the British Museum in London, to my mind.
Until I saw this last year, it wasn’t obvious to me what kind of role Arabic played in Chinese art centuries ago.

Drink Pepsi-Cola

I love old advertisements and signs painted on old buildings. Much more elegant than our modern billboards.
The photos immediately above and below were taken in Winnipeg; the next ones are from Seattle, Portland, Brussels, Montreal and New York.
