North Toronto station

This stately building on Yonge Street in Toronto used to be home to North Toronto railway station. I had to look up this building in Google to verify its history … but its proximity to train tracks and the lovely clock tower pretty much gave away its heritage. It is currently a (very beautiful) liquor store.

The first lady of Paris

Notre-Dame-de-Paris

It was so disheartening to watch the news today and learn of the fire that engulfed the roof at Notre-Dame-de-Paris Cathedral. If there’s any good news to be had, it appears much of the structure remains intact and many of the historic artifacts and artwork were saved from the blaze.

I had the distinct pleasure of visiting the church in September 2012, as millions of visitors did yearly until today. I did not get the chance to scamper up to the top for a city view — next time, I thought then. With hope, this grand place of worship and one of Paris’s jewels will be rebuilt and reopen with renewed splendour.

From my visit in March: Don Station is one of the preserved railway structures and pieces of equipment installed at Roundhouse Park in Toronto.

Enoch Sales Residence (1904-2019)

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

This is the last photo I took of the little yellow house once belonging to Enoch Sales.

The building in Calgary’s Victoria Park neighbourhood, long in a state of disrepair, was the last remaining Queen Anne Revival-style home in the city. It had been slated to be part of an area revitalization project called the Rivers District.

The building burned in a two-alarm fire on Feb. 2, 2019, and was subsequently demolished.

Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.

Although I’m not sure streetcars ever ran on Central Ave. in Phoenix, Arizona, this retro-looking sign is cool nonetheless.

Sutro Baths

Another view from my quick hike in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area last month. The remnants of the old Sutro Baths are at the left, along the shore.

Portland, Oregon

This fantastic mural just off N.E. Alberta Street in Portland, Oregon, depicts some important figure in African American history. Snapped on my visit there in April 2016.

A 3-D representation of the United Kingdom’s coat of arms, spotted as I wandered around  Bath, England, back in May.
