This is art outside the British Library in London memorializing Sir Isaac Newton.
The British Library isn’t the most obvious tourist attraction but there are a few noteworthy things to see in the parts of its permanent collection that don’t require a membership.
On the ground floor is a huge room containing dozens of historical documents, including a copy of the Magna Carta, ancient bibles and Qur’ans, books containing the first-known copies of beloved works of fiction, and manuscripts from celebrated classical music composers.
For the philately-minded among you, there is a collection of century-old stamps built into the walls of the ground floor, toward the back of the building.
And of course, there’s a revolving roster of temporary exhibitions. I visited too early to catch this forthcoming exhibition on cartography, which runs from Friday, Nov. 2, 2016 until Monday, March 1, 2017.
There is a lot of seating for reading and studying, as you would imagine.
And if none of those things interest you, you might consider popping in anyway: the facility has a cafeteria/café and there is public wifi (naturally).

King Eddy reborn

Back after a few weeks AFK.
Also (soon to be) back is Calgary’s venerable King Edward Hotel, a noted blues venue, which was carefully dismantled and rebuilt as part of the new Canadian Music Centre in East Village.
Above, how things looked a few weekends ago … and below, when the King Eddy stood alone at the corner of 9 Ave. and 4 St. S.E., almost five years ago.

Blues and more blues

Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman’s Bastion is a wonderful gem on the Buda side of the Danube River in Budapest.
The structure itself is grand and ornate, while the view of Pest from the top of the attraction is equally spectacular.

This is Neue Wache, a memorial in Berlin dedicated to civilian victims of war.
According to online and other published documentation, the central statue depicting a mother and her dead child is placed under the oculus to deliberately expose it to the elements.
It also provides the moving piece of art with very striking lighting.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Calgary’s Heritage Park, so I figured today was a good occasion to return for a visit.

The weather cooperated perfectly with the park’s annual Railway Days. Above, two of their old steam engines ply the rails on site.

Walk steeped in history

This awesome row of columns is found along one side of Museum Island in Berlin. The crowds are relatively sparse if you visit first thing in the morning.

This is a kitschy but awesome throwback to the old East Germany, right in the heart of Alexandrplatz. Seen on my recent visit there, at the beginning of the month.

Skyward

The sunset light has a cool (or is that warm?) effect on the oxidizing art at Poppy Plaza, Calgary.
