It was a quieter evening than usual on Thursday night at Calgary’s Olympic Plaza, typically home to the city’s new year’s eve celebrations. With the public health emergency still ongoing, there was no big party and no official fireworks display to ring in 2021. Seen here are some of the Christmas lights at Olympic Plaza in the foreground, with Calgary’s Historic City Hall in seasonal colours in the background.

This is a quick smartphone snap from down on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary, just minutes into 2020. This is a pedestrian-only area during the day but normally open to cars after 6 p.m. In the small hours of January 1, 2020, the people of Calgary had clearly decided otherwise.

One among the thousands of Calgarians who flocked to Olympic Plaza on New Year’s Eve, this little boy was sitting on his father’s shoulders for a better view of the Calgary Tower fireworks display.
