San Francisco, California, U.S.A.

So, no shenanigans … but the sanction against such behaviour might not be altogether unpleasant for some people. Spotted in the Haight-Ashbury neighbourhood in San Francisco earlier this month.

A cute sculpture in one of the outdoor spaces at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Possibly the biggest penny I’ve seen in a long time!

A very explicit warning at the entrance to a parking garage in downtown San Francisco.

Can’t be still

From earlier this month: A close-up view of a sculpture called “Shaking Man” at Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco.

Dancing in the wind

This is the work of a very talented kite-flyer, who was hanging out at San Francisco’s Crissy Field a few weekends ago.

U.S. dollar coin: It’s not a myth!

One-dollar coin

So I’d heard for years the U.S. government has been trying to get people to use dollar coins instead of dollar bills.
Haven’t ever seen one in real life, either.
Of course, given the continuing availability of the paper version, I reckon there’s no real incentive for anyone to switch and actually use coins instead.
Imagine my surprise when a store clerk somewhere in Portland last week apologized and asked me if it’d be OK for my change to include a dollar coin.
I happily accepted.

Flipping through some old photos today, I noticed I’ve accumulated images of quite a number of theatre marquees. Here are some of my favourites.

Great light way

London’s Lyric Theatre.

Now screening
The defunct Uptown Theatre in Calgary.

Folies Pigalle
Les Folies Pigalle in Paris.

New Mission
San Francisco’s New Mission theatre marquee.

Corona Theatre
The Corona in Montreal.

Ah, the New York City Subway. I admire your efficiency. Snapped this one about two years ago on my last visit to the Big Apple.

Sing, sing, sing

Many of the walls along the streets and alleys of San Francisco’s Mission district are adorned with awesome pieces of art. If you do nothing else in the neighbourhood, take a couple of hours to meander and explore for these nuggets sprinkled all through. There are even walking tours specifically made for seeing these pieces of street art. It’s truly a feast for the eyes.

History lesson Hunting the tiger War machine

See more from my trip to the San Francisco Bay area, back in March 2010.
Need to get back there soon!

Holding things together

I doubt anyone can visit New York without taking a shot that looks a little like this one. And while every picture is similar, none will ever be quite the same. So here’s my contribution to the virtual gallery of images dedicated to the Brooklyn Bridge. And below are a few more.
