Aquatic oasis: A visit to the Seattle Aquarium

Fishies, octopi and otters, oh my! Here are a handful of snapshots from the Seattle Aquarium. The giant octopus, immediately below, was released to the sea a few days after I visited.

Winning strategy: The Winner sculpture in downtown Calgary

This is a piece of art called The Winner, which is installed along 8 Ave. S.W. between 7 and 8 St. in downtown Calgary. The image was edited in part with the iOS version of iPhoto, to add a tilt-shift style effect.

Strolling into town on the Peace Bridge across the Bow River in Calgary, designed by Santiago Calatrava

This bridge was hard on the wallet … thank goodness it’s easy on the eyes.

Smells like teen spirit

Teen spirit

Another great attraction in Seattle is the EMP Museum, which focuses on popular art and music.
The museum, housed in a building designed by Frank Gehry, covers topics spanning modern music and popular culture.
The photo above is in the first display in an exhibit on the emergence of punk and grunge, focusing on Nirvana. The guitar is a Mosrite Gospel, played by Kurt Cobain during the Seattle show in which the song Smells Like Teen Spirit was performed publicly for the first time.
Other parts of the exhibit include such seminal artifacts as Nirvana’s first demo tape and the original photo that would become the cover art for Nevermind.
It’s a fascinating journey through the first days of the Pacific Northwest punk/grunge scene, all the way through its popularization and its acceptance by mainstream media.
Nearby are a historical guitar gallery and an exhibit on Jimi Hendrix.
Elsewhere in the museum are exhibits on horror movies, science fiction and the art of video games, the museum’s newest installation, whose opening I missed due to timing, unfortunately.
If you’re in Seattle for a visit (and especially if you call Seattle home), do make time for this museum.

Flickr updates iPhone/iOS app

What many of us have been waiting for. See for yourself!

20130221-024652.jpg

UPDATE WITH LIGHTNING REVIEW: After a few minutes of quick use, I have found the following.
1) The uploading is much quicker, as advertised.
2) You still can’t upload video, a feature many users requested.
3) There is indeed a “Save photo” button that appears — but only valid for your own pictures.
4) The IPTC data reading is still broken. Keywords in IPTC fields still don’t show as tags. Not only that, it’s actually worse now. See the following two screengrabs. While the photo title and caption appear correctly inside the new Flickr app, they do not show properly on the Flickr website. How weird is that?
I’ve removed that image from my Flickr feed until I can figure out if it’s a bug or if I’ve done something wrong.

FURTHER UPDATE: My latest batch of photos had their titles and captions properly published. IPTC tags are still broken, however.
