Rising above the landscape

This tribute to Otto van Bismarck was one of Hamburg’s landmarks visible from my hotel room. Seen up close, I confirmed my initial sense of how big the thing really is.

Making time

This is one of the more original time pieces I’ve ever come across: a video clock at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Fun and functional.

Visual restoration

Several months ago, I told you about an awesome mural in Calgary’s Kensington defaced by taggers. It suffered more damage since then but, subsequently, has received some tender loving care. What you see here is primer applied over some tagged section, made ready for the artist to re-create his masterpiece.

Watercolour coming alive

After the United Brotherhood Of Carpenters and Joiners left their longtime home on 10 St. N.W. in Calgary, a temporary wall went up around it … and soon after, the art began to appear.

Art in progress

Plaza refreshed

Digging through some photos from late 2013, I came across this quick snapshot of a poster reproducing an artist’s rendition for a remake of Horton Plaza Park in San Diego, above.
It struck me at the time how much those tall metallic columns really look like the Luminous Crossing towers of light at either end of the Calgary transit mall, below.
There’s no evidence (none I could find, anyway) the same artist is responsible for both, which makes this visual/design coincidence even more striking.

Twist of colour

Folding unto itself

This Frank Gehry-designed structure in Seattle is as dynamic as the ambient light around it.
Constructed for the 1962 World’s Fair, the building now houses the EMP Museum.
