The world as art

These windows at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, California, showcase the living art that is the Pacific Ocean.
A security guard there said artists would prefer not to be displayed in this gallery because people spend more time staring out the window than at anything else in the room. (And as it happens, on this day, the other walls are bare.)

River of fog

Looking down from a plane at the B.C. Lower Mainland last Tuesday … that blanket of humidity was quite shallow. As our aircraft was descending for arrival Vancouver airport, the tires hit the runway not long after we pierced through the fog.

U.S. dollar coin: It’s not a myth!

One-dollar coin

So I’d heard for years the U.S. government has been trying to get people to use dollar coins instead of dollar bills.
Haven’t ever seen one in real life, either.
Of course, given the continuing availability of the paper version, I reckon there’s no real incentive for anyone to switch and actually use coins instead.
Imagine my surprise when a store clerk somewhere in Portland last week apologized and asked me if it’d be OK for my change to include a dollar coin.
I happily accepted.

Prehistoric pedigree

Another view of the Red Deer River this summer, taken just north of the town of Drumheller, Alberta, in the heart of the Badlands.

Pelican hangout

This pelican is one of the residents of St. James Park in London, just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace. The image was captured about a year ago.

Manhattan through the fog

Visibly beautiful

This shot is from a trip to New York back in February 2011. The cool thing about going to such an attraction as the Empire State Building in the dead of night on a cool late-winter evening is definitely the lack of lines through security and whatnot. The risk, however, is that you’ll encounter cold temperatures, blustery winds and rapidly shifting weather — as seen in this photo!

From one icon to another

This is what a southerly view looked like from Rockefeller Center in New York, upon my last visit there back in August 2011. More photos from that trip can be seen here.

Underdog

Whilst taking the Seattle Underground Tour, we emerged briefly into an alley to find this neat example of eight-bit art. This was snapped back in February.

Reminder of all wild things

Art installation not far from Portage and Main in Winnipeg. Snapped this when I was passing through town in April.
