Visiting Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle is like immersing one-self in an other-worldly experience. So many delicate pieces of glass art created in funky shapes and bathed in just the right kind and right amount of light … it’s almost magical.

Passing through San Francisco in a series of long layovers last month, I came upon the Ferry Building, all decked out in lights, presumably to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition.

This is one of the retro symbols of Germany.
Ampelmann is the name given to the “walk” symbol from pedestrian traffic lights in East Germany during communist times.
The figure was so beloved, there was an uproar when officials tried to replace it. As a consequence, they remain an active holdover … and it wouldn’t be shocking to find them in parts of Germany that were never behind the Iron Curtain.
