Bit by an eight-bit bug

Eight-bit bug

Someone is sticking cut-outs of images, reminiscent of eight-bit video games, on walls in parts of the city. I’ve seen two around Kensington Rd. and 10 St. N.W., including the one above, and there was one on a wall on Memorial Dr. under the Centre Street Bridge, briefly anyway. I’m intrigued and will keep an eye out for more of these …

Immersed in relaxation

Here’s a neat visual trick, spotted by the window of an office in downtown Phoenix a couple of weeks ago.

Fireball on wheels

Downtown Phoenix can seem a little sterile at times … but slide into an alley here and there and you might find something as bright and colourful as this, which I spotted not too long ago at the (very discreet) entrance to a bicycle maintenance shop.

Other-worldly view

Somewhere in this craggy, arid landscape is downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The view was captured from a park on South Mountain on a recent visit there.

Ever-changing skyline

Here’s a look toward Calgary’s downtown core, from the south end of the bridge linking Inglewood with St. Patrick’s Island. It seems as if there’s a new building to see every time I make it here to capture a skyline photo.

Not-so-standard art

This seven-storey sculpture called Bloom graces the public space on St. Patrick’s Island in Calgary. The assemblage of street lights conceived by Montreal-born artist Michel de Broin was unveiled last year.

King Eddy reborn

Back after a few weeks AFK.
Also (soon to be) back is Calgary’s venerable King Edward Hotel, a noted blues venue, which was carefully dismantled and rebuilt as part of the new Canadian Music Centre in East Village.
Above, how things looked a few weekends ago … and below, when the King Eddy stood alone at the corner of 9 Ave. and 4 St. S.E., almost five years ago.

Azur

The Montreal Transit Corp. (Société de transport de Montréal, or STM) recently began revenue service of its next-generation métro cars. Dubbed “Azur”, the STM’s MPM-10 rolling stock is being built by a Bombardier-Alstom consortium. The order is for 468 cars, assembled in nine-car train-sets.
As the newer-model trains are gradually delivered, they will replace vintage MR-63 rolling stock, in service since the Montreal métro opened in 1966.
I only got a brief glimpse of the new Azur train at the Mont-Royal métro station on my last trip to Montreal, on its second day of revenue service. Perhaps I’ll be lucky enough to ride one upon my next visit.

This passageway isn’t far from the Viktualienmarkt market square in Munich. This image was snapped on my visit there back in September.
