Smells like teen spirit

Teen spirit

Another great attraction in Seattle is the EMP Museum, which focuses on popular art and music.
The museum, housed in a building designed by Frank Gehry, covers topics spanning modern music and popular culture.
The photo above is in the first display in an exhibit on the emergence of punk and grunge, focusing on Nirvana. The guitar is a Mosrite Gospel, played by Kurt Cobain during the Seattle show in which the song Smells Like Teen Spirit was performed publicly for the first time.
Other parts of the exhibit include such seminal artifacts as Nirvana’s first demo tape and the original photo that would become the cover art for Nevermind.
It’s a fascinating journey through the first days of the Pacific Northwest punk/grunge scene, all the way through its popularization and its acceptance by mainstream media.
Nearby are a historical guitar gallery and an exhibit on Jimi Hendrix.
Elsewhere in the museum are exhibits on horror movies, science fiction and the art of video games, the museum’s newest installation, whose opening I missed due to timing, unfortunately.
If you’re in Seattle for a visit (and especially if you call Seattle home), do make time for this museum.

Flickr updates iPhone/iOS app

What many of us have been waiting for. See for yourself!

20130221-024652.jpg

UPDATE WITH LIGHTNING REVIEW: After a few minutes of quick use, I have found the following.
1) The uploading is much quicker, as advertised.
2) You still can’t upload video, a feature many users requested.
3) There is indeed a “Save photo” button that appears — but only valid for your own pictures.
4) The IPTC data reading is still broken. Keywords in IPTC fields still don’t show as tags. Not only that, it’s actually worse now. See the following two screengrabs. While the photo title and caption appear correctly inside the new Flickr app, they do not show properly on the Flickr website. How weird is that?
I’ve removed that image from my Flickr feed until I can figure out if it’s a bug or if I’ve done something wrong.

FURTHER UPDATE: My latest batch of photos had their titles and captions properly published. IPTC tags are still broken, however.

Ocular substitution

Here’s an undoubtedly unauthorized (and certainly creepy!) alteration to a poster outside a shop in Calgary’s Kensington neighbourhood.

Scheduled arrivals and departures

I love this kind of information board in train stations. Simple, effective, low-maintenance. The retro feel is a bonus. This one is at Portland Union Station.

Moody sky ...

Samis Rd. just below Rotary Park is one of my favourite viewpoints for photographing downtown Calgary. Just one downside: The Calgary Tower isn’t visible from this angle.
I guess I’ll have to take another visit to Scotsman’s Hill instead. One of these days. 🙂

Beneath 111 Yesler in Seattle

Most people’s exposure to subterranean Seattle is limited to the transit tunnels downtown.
But just a few blocks toward the harbour, the Underground Tour takes you into that city’s first tunnels, intimately tied to Seattle’s history and development.
It’s a particular treat for history buffs and those who love urban decay.
Thanks to our guide Allie (below) for an informative and entertaining visit.

Death takes flight over NE Alberta Street in Portland, Oregon

So I look up on a photowalk on NE Alberta St. in Portland last weekend to find myself pleasantly surprised by a skeleton attempting to fly … or so it seems, anyway!

That other Bowery

You’d be forgiven if you walked into this place and thought you’d been transported to New York. But you are really in a bagel shop on the edge of the Pearl District, not far from Portland Union Station.

Saturday morning Winter Portland Farmers Market

Just a couple of Saturdays left in the winter market in the green space behind the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland. Lots of tasty foods prepared on the spot and fresh produce to bring home.
