White Christmas … at least in your mind

Nouvelle couche de neige

On this Christmas Eve, we’re headed for a brown (or green) Christmas in Calgary.
Please join me on an imaginary walk through a forest of evergreens covered in a thin layer of fresh, crunchy snow. Take a deep breath of crisp, pine-scented air as you stand under a clear, blue sky punctuated by the low sun at high noon.
Give yourself a Christmas atmosphere as perfect as you want it to be.

For those among you who don’t live in Calgary, you should know our weather is … how shall I say … variable.
The photo on the left was taken yesterday; it was sunny and the daytime high was 25 to 27 Celsius, depending who you ask.
The photo on the right was taken today; definitely not sunny and the temperature has been falling since overnight, now hovering around 0 Celsius.
What a change!

Winter makes comeback

Nothing unusual about this scene happening in May, I swear. Captured on my smartphone Saturday morning.

Waiting for the waves to roll in

… because it’s not very warm right now here at home! This brief moment of escapism comes to you by way of the beaches in La Jolla, San Diego.

River of fog

Looking down from a plane at the B.C. Lower Mainland last Tuesday … that blanket of humidity was quite shallow. As our aircraft was descending for arrival Vancouver airport, the tires hit the runway not long after we pierced through the fog.

Shifting waterways

New island

In the wake of the floods that washed over Calgary and southern Alberta in June, our rivers and riverbanks have changed — a lot in some places.
In the image above from early September, for example, that gravel island under the piers of the Louise Bridge over the Bow River in Calgary wasn’t there until the water receded.
In other places along the Bow and Elbow rivers, the banks have been eroded away. Meanwhile, up in the mountains, rivers and streams are cutting across backcountry, campgrounds and golf courses where they never did before.
Truly a testament to the power of nature.
Two more photos below, taken on June 25, 2013, in the immediate aftermath of the flood.

In other words … angry-looking clouds in Alberta during summer.

After Calgary’s floodwaters recede

In the dark
Downtown Calgary as it appeared in the early-morning hours of June 24, 2013. Parts of the core were still without electricity in the aftermath of record flooding in the city. The darkened area in the foreground is the flood-hit neighbourhood of Sunnyside. As of today, power is restored to many of these areas.

My apologies for not posting in several days. To say that I’ve been distracted for about a week is something of an understatement.
As you’ve likely heard in the news, our area was recently hit with flooding from the Bow and Elbow rivers.
The damage and devastation is almost unfathomable. Tens of thousands of people were directly affected, with raging waters as high as anyone can remember flowing into homes, causing property damage to individuals, businesses and governments estimated as high as $5 billion.
You’ve probably seen footage of homes in southern Alberta simply picked up and carried away by swollen rivers.
A handful of individuals also lost their lives in this natural disaster.
In the midst of the loss, however, there is something bright shining through.
As I described in my newspaper column yesterday, the spirit of our community is rising above the devastation.
In several flood-hit neighbourhoods, people are coming together to strip out wet basements and make homes safe.
There are strangers who wander the city offering help to whomever requires it.
Ordinary Calgarians by the thousands have answered the call for volunteers.
And then, there’s all of you across Canada and around the world who’ve offered your sympathy and financial assistance to relief programs, such as the one organized by the Canadian Red Cross.
As impressive as it was to see what water did to our towns and cities, it is even more impressive to see how almost everyone is responding to the crisis.
Thank you, one and all.
