For years, I’ve been looking for a plaque or a marker to explain the presence of this arch along the Bow River pathway in downtown Calgary. I have yet to find such a thing … so for now, I’m letting my imagination fill in the blanks about this structure’s origin story.

Winter has returned with a vengeance in my part of the world. After a significant snowfall last week, we’re now dealing with arctic temperatures until the end of the week. The scene above is from last Wednesday, when it was still relatively safe to be outside!

It was a quieter evening than usual on Thursday night at Calgary’s Olympic Plaza, typically home to the city’s new year’s eve celebrations. With the public health emergency still ongoing, there was no big party and no official fireworks display to ring in 2021. Seen here are some of the Christmas lights at Olympic Plaza in the foreground, with Calgary’s Historic City Hall in seasonal colours in the background.
